Greater Mekong
The Greater Mekong Basin is a rich ecosystem that supports the lives and livelihoods of millions of poor in Southeast Asia. Encompassing the nations of Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam, it is coming under enormous intensification pressures for multiple uses that threaten to undermine its productivity and resilience.
WorldFish Center’s work in the Greater Mekong is focused on securing food and improving health, reducing poverty through diversified livelihoods, and sustaining aquatic ecosystems to benefit the poor. Closely aligned with the Millennium Development Goals and national poverty reduction strategies, these goals are especially important and relevant in a region whose population is overwhelmingly concentrated around aquatic ecosystems and is highly dependent on fish.
Limited information on the impact of development decisions on the sustainability of this ecosystem, and insufficient options for sound aquaculture development have hampered regional efforts to prevent the degradation of this zone. The implementation of new policies suffers from inadequate technical and institutional capacity.
